TURKU MARKET SQUARE COMPLETED - BUSES HAVE RETURNED
The New Market Square’s inauguration was celebrated in mid-September. The inauguration attracted over 100,000 visitors to Hansakortteli Shopping Centre over the weekend.
The completion of the Market Square has been positively reflected also in Hansakortteli’s customer flows, and the rest of the year is expected to continue with strong growth.
“The opening weekend of the Market Square was a success. The most gratifying thing is that according to data, a quarter of the visitors have not visited us for a while,” says Shopping Centre Director Timo Palviainen.
The street areas surrounding the Turku Market Square and the bus stops in the square are now ready for public transport. As a result, Föli buses returned to the Market Square.
“In addition to great public transport connections, there are underground parking lots under the Market Square for about 600 cars, gateways to the adjoining commercial business blocks, and elevators to the pavilion restaurant buildings. We now have one of the most accessible city centres in Finland”, emphasizes Palviainen.
A FAMILY ROOM OPENED, AND THE FOOD COURT RENOVATED
A family room named Little Hansa has just opened in Hansakortteli. The colorful, child-inspiring space is designed to serve especially families with infants and toddlers. The space was developed based on customer feedback and together with Hansakortteli´s own customer board.
Little Hansa has a children's playground and comfortable space suitable for nursing, feeding and caring for infants and toddlers. There are various services available, such as a diaper and coffee machine. Hansakortteli plans to organize a versatile program of interest to families.
“For a long time, Turku city centre has lacked a space that serves families with children, where the functions of play, eating and care are combined. The new Little Hansa family room has its own space on the second floor of the shopping centre,” says Mirva Järvinen, Hansakortteli’s Marketing Manager.
Besides the new family room, Hansakortteli has renovated its food court. The space is now more inviting and cozier with wood wall panels and new furniture.
HANSAILMIÖ WAS A TRUE PHENOMENON
The bi-annual commercial campaign Hansailmiö attracted over 160,000 visitors to the shopping centre. The number of visitors increased by 19 % and sales grew by 18 % compared to the previous campaign last autumn.
Hansailmiö was full of events and offers. Hansakortteli organized a special event for the new inhabitants of Turku who got “a welcome to the city” goodie bag. The main square of Hansa was turned into a pop-up restaurant. The shops of Hansakortteli joined forces and made collaborative offers.
The campaign got a huge reach of over 19 million impressions in the area, through a catalogue distributed to home addresses, an extensive advertising campaign, PR and social media.
“We decided to open our first restaurant in the Turku region in Hansakortteli, because we were offered a wonderful space with the view over the Turku Market Square and along the lively flow of people. Customers have found us very well. Every day, new people stop by our restaurant, and they have been really delighted with their experience”,

HANSAKORTTELI STEPPING UP TO REDUCE ITS ENERGY CONSUMPTION
In line with the call from the Finnish government, Hansakortteli is stepping up its efforts to reduce energy consumption in order to contribute to the national effort. The temperatures of the background and storage rooms have been decreased by 1–2 degrees from the previous level. The ventilation machines in the general rooms adapt according to the number of customers.
Tenants are also instructed to save energy. All electricity used in the shopping centre is produced by wind power. In addition, emission-free district heating was introduced at the beginning of 2022.
Hansakortteli’s energy consumption has decreased by more than 20 % compared to 2018. As proof of meritorious work in 2021, it received the BREEAM-In-Use environmental classification “Very Good”.
